Hi!!!!!!!!!
The biggest news of this week was the release of the music of 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi'. The music review will be here this week - that's a promise!
Coming back to Laxmikant - Pyarelal (LP) and their Long Playing (LP) association with the biggest directors of the Hindi Cinema, the most notable thing is that they had a long lasting relationship with not one or two, but several prominent directors! When we speak about Shankar Jaikishan, their association with Raj Kapoor leads the party! When we speak about Ravi, B. R. Chopra was his man! Remember Kalyanji - Anandji, Manoj Kumar and Prakash Mehra's name flashes in your mind! R. D. Burman had Shakti Samanta and Nasir Hussain! S. D. Burman and Vijay Anand were inseparable! Now come to Laxmikant - Pyarelal, and there is list out there! Raj Khosla, Raj Kapoor, Subhash Ghai, J. Om Prakash, Mohan Kumar, Manmohan Desai, Manoj Kumar are some of the names that come in our minds! It must have been a miracle to have a long term bonding with these legends who had such varied taste as far as music in their films was concerned. Raj Khosla's music had earthiness, Raj Kapoor's music had to had a larger than life quality in even the simplest of songs, Subhash Ghai's music demanded melody, Mohan Kumar's musical inclination was simplicity, Manmohan Desai's music was aggressive, and Manoj Kumar had a taste for emotions! God, such diverse demands and two gentlemen always had something in them to satisfy each and every one of them! That was the beauty of Laxmikant-Pyarelal!
What I have said can be argued - readers may point out that apart from LP, the other music directors also had a long association with prominent directors, and that is very true! But the point is that LP had a bonding with not one but several of them, while others had a impactful relation with one or two!
Let's read more about LP's association with some melodic filmmakers.
Raj Khosla and Laxmikant-Pyarelal (10 Films)
Raj Khosla worked with S. D. Burman, O. P. Nayyar, Ravi and then he shifted to LP , who worked with him for 10 films right from Anita (1967) to Mera Dost Mera Dushman (1984). The association produced eternal scores like Anita, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Do Raaste, Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki, Dostana! Raj Khosla had said on an occassion- Once you have LP, you don't need anybody else!
Raj Kapoor and Laxmikant-Pyarelal (3 Films)
The Showman of the Millenium - Raj Kapoor had a very successful bonding with Shankar Jaikishan (SJ) who worked with him right from Barsaat (1949) to Mera Naam Joker (1970). When he decided to launch his son - Rishi Kapoor in Bobby (1973), LP were signed to take over the SJ legacy! And what a brilliant choice it turned out to be! LP went on to give us memorable numbers like Main Shayar To Nahin, Hum Tum Ek Kamre Mein, Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate among many others in Bobby! Raj Kapoor directed three movies after Bobby - Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Prem Rog and Ram Teri Ganga Maili. Two of the last three movies directed by Raj Kapoor had Laxmikant Pyarelal as music directors!
Manoj Kumar and Laxmikant-Pyarelal (4 Films)
Manoj Kumar had a strong bonding with Kalyanji Anandji (KA) in Upkar and Purab Aur Pachchim. He shifted to LP with Shor, and post Shor only once he turned away from LP in Clerk! LP gave Manoj Kumar - Shor, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Kranti, Jai Hind-The Pride!
Manmohan Desai and Laxmikant-Pyarelal (9 Films)
Manmohan Desai, the Maestro of Formula Films, always aspired to have popular music in his directorial ventures, and had more or less been successful in that aspiration. He had started his career with Chalia in 1960 and till 1973 made 9 films using six music directors - Kalyanji Anandji, Shankar Jaikishan, O. P. Nayyar, Sonik Omi, R. D. Burman, Ganesh! In 1974 he made Roti, and for his next 9 directorial ventures LP was the constant factor! They together amalgamated to give us memorable scores in Roti, Dharam Veer, Amar Akbar Anthony, Suhaag, Parvarish, Suhaag, Naseeb, Desh Premee, Coolie! The last two ventures of Manmohan Desai had Anu Malik as music directors. Incidently, the last movie concieved by him saw the return of LP in MKD Films (Deewana Mastana 1997)!
Subhash Ghai and Laxmikant-Pyarelal (9 Films)
Subhash Ghai has been looked as a director who always had a flair for good music. He started his directorial career with Kalicharan which had Kalyanji Anandji, moved on to Vishwanath with Rajesh Roshan, and then he found his musical anchor in LP. The Subhash Ghai - LP association started in Guatam Govinda (1979) and lasted throughout the 80's and successfully culminated with Khalnayak in 1993! In between these years LP provided their magical touch in 9 out of the 10 movies directed by Subhash Ghai!
J. Om Prakash and Laxmikant-Pyarelal (9 Films)
J. Om Prakash had worked with Madan Mohan before he took R. D. Burman for Aap Ki Kasam in 1974, and he extracted excellent work from him. In Aakraman (1975), he teamed with LP, and that bond lasted till Agnee (1988). In between these 13 years, he directed 11 movies out of which 9 had music by LP. They together entertained us by giving us fantastic scores in Aakraman, Apnapan, Aashiq Hoon Baharon Ka, Aasha, Aas Paas, Arpan and Aap Ke Saath.
Mohan Kumar and Laxmikant-Pyarelal (9 Films)
Shankar Jaikishan and Madan Mohan were the favourite music directors of Mohan Kumar, but it all changed with Aap Aaye Bahaar Aayee(1971). Right from 1971 to 1990, Mohan Kumar never directed any movie without LP. The magic of LP with Mohan Kumar was evident in scores of Aap Aaye Bahaar Aayee, Anjaana, Mome Ki Gudiya, Amir Garib, Avtaar and Amrit!
The above are to be taken only as examples, because LP had a very successful tuning with other acclaimed directors like Mahesh Bhatt (Naam, Gumrah, Dhun), Satyen Bose (Dosti, Wapas, Aasra, Jeevan Mrityu), Brij (Night In London, Paise Ki Gudiya, Do Bhai), Mukul Anand (Insaaf, Hum, Khuda Gawah, Trimurti), J. P. Dutta (Ghulami, Batwara, Yateem, Hathyaar, Kshatriya), Dulal Guha (Dushman, Dharti Kahe Pukar Ke, Pratigya, Dost), Raghunath Jhalani (Aaye Din Bahaar Ke, Aaya Saawan Jhoom Ke, Man Ki Aankhein, Badalte Rishte), Raj Kumar Kohli (Lutera, Gora Aur Kala, Naagin, Jaani Dushman, Bees Saal Baad), Amar Kumar (Mere Humdum Mere Dost, Pyasi Shaam, Barkha Bahar), Harmesh Malhotra (Lafangey, Nagina, Nigahen, Heer Ranjha), Ramanand Sagar (Jalte Badan, Charas, Prem Bandhan, Baghavat), amongst many others!
The point I have tried to make by illustrating the association of LP with various directors is that LP were probably the only one who were chameleons as far as the requirements of the directors, script, setting was concerned. Once a director had the oppurtunity to work them, rarely they let them go! Why - ask this question to yourself and you will get the answer! The music of Raj Khosla's movies and music of Raj Kapoor's movies were as different as chalk and cheese. There was only one LP who could have bridged this gap between the varied tastes of filmmakers and change colours so magnificently!

I agree with you, but I wonder why your well-conceived and written article ignores the Southern names led by L.V.Prasad, K.Vishwanath, K.Balachander and P.Mallikarjuna Rao and moving on to T.Rama Rao (21 films, though high in quality only in Judaai, Andhaa Kaanoon and Nache Mayuri). Pl add the first two distinguished collaborations.
ReplyDeleteThere were others too - Rajshri Productions (5 great scores - they did more films with Ravindra Jain and Baamlaxman but without consistency), Premji, Mohan Segal, Ravi Tandon, Raghunath Jhalani, Surinder and Boney Kapoor, Rajkumar Kohli, Harmesh Malhotra and even potboiler names like Kalpataru/K. Parvez, K.C.Bokadia, K.Bapaiah, Dasari Narayana Rao et PL PUT UP PRASAD AND VISHWANATH to round off a great article.
By the way, L-P not only scored with diverse names but ALSO CREATED DIVERSES STYLES FOR EACH OF THEM - AND WITHIN THAT COMPOSED PERFECT SCORES FOR THE SUBJECTS THAT WERE ALSO DIVERSE - CHECK BOBBY, SSS, PREM ROG WITH RK, SHOR, RKM AND KRANTI WITH MANOJ AND SARGAM, SUR-SANGAM, EESHWAR AND SANJOG WITH K.VISHWANATH.
Please write an analysis of those composers who did more than 5 films with one banner/producer/director. It will be very revealing!
ReplyDeleteGreat article !, L-P definitely had excellent associations with many directors/banners.
ReplyDeleteJust a small correction, JOP signed L-P for the first time in Aye Din Bahar Ke (1966) and not Aakraman (1975).
Besides NH and SS, RD also had nice associations with Ramesh Behl, Rahul Rawail, the Sippy's, and Dev Anand among others.

Hi Princeali!
ReplyDeleteAaye Din Bahar Ke was not directed by J. Om Prakash. He Produced the movie!
Here we are talking about LP's association with the directors. LP and the banners for which they worked is a different story altogether. Will post it soon!
Regards,
Vishal
Hi Viz,
ReplyDeleteThat's true, but since RK, JOP, Subhash Ghai (besides others) were also producers of some of the films they directed, even though the article is about directors, I thought of mentioning that the JOP-LP connection started before 1975 through the JOP banner.
Laxmikant Pyarelal were primarily responsible for eliminating the dominance of the older music directors such as C. Ramchandra, Naushad, Shankar-Jaikishen, Madanmohan, O.P.Nayyar, Ravi etc.
ReplyDeleteLaxmikant-Pyarelal was always the first choice for any film producing company ever since they made their entry into Hindi Film Music in 1963. As such LP has worked with almost all the prominent film producers’ directors but here some very special and major film companies, producers and directors, who have used LP often.
RJASHREE PICTURES:- (Tarachand Barjatya)
Leaving behind music director Roshan, Rajashri gave first preference to compose music for their very second film “Dosti” (1964), followed by Taqdeer (1967), “Jeevan Mrityu”(1969), “Uphaar” (1970), “Piya Ka Ghar” (1972). LP never disappointed Rajashree Films. The songs of the above films are still popular.
RAJKHOSLA FILMS:- (Raj Khosla)
O.P. Nayyar and Madan Mohan were the favorite music directors for the famous director Raj Khosla. But when he started his maiden film production company he preferred Laxmikant-Pyarelal as the first choice for his very first film “Anita” (1967) followed by
“Do Raaste” (1969), “Mera Gaon Mera Desh” (1970) and many more…and continued with LP till his last film “Main Tulasi Tere Aangan Ki”. All are musical hit films.
NISHI FILMS:- (Raj Kumar Kohli)
Raj Kumar Kohli and LP came together with “Lootera” (1965). A super musical hit this association continued till 1990.
PRASAD PRODUCTIONS:- (L.V.Prasad)
Earlier in Prasad Productions Films, Shankar-Jaikishan, C.Ramchandra, Roshan have scored the music but L.V.Prasad switch over to Laxmikant-Pyarelal for “Milan” (1967) followed by “Raja Aur Rank” (1968), “Jine Ki Raah” (1969), “Khilona” (1970) etc… and continued till “Ek Duje Ke Liye” (1981). All have a melodious musical score.
FILMUUG:- (J. Omprakash)
Earlier Shankar-Jaikishan have given hit music to all the J.Omprakash’s films till 1966 when J.Omprakash signed Laxmikant-Pyarelal for “Aaye Din Bahar Ke” this association continued till “Asha” (1980). All J. Omprkash films have evergreen music.
V.SHANTARAM FILMS:- (V. Shantaram)
C. Ramchandra, Ramlal were the music directors for earlier films of V. Shantaram. But when he wanted to make another “Classical Dance” based film in 1971 he gave chance to Laxmikant-Pyarelal for “Jal Bin Bijalee Nrutya Bin Bijalee”. An outstanding music.
RK FILMS:- (Raj Kapoor)
After the death of Jaikishan. Raj Kapoor switch over to Laxmikant-Pyarelal for “Bobby” (1973), super duper musical hit movie of the hindi cinema, followed by Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1977) and Pram Rog (1984). Evergreen musical hits.
YASHRAJ FILMS:- (Yash Chopra)
Yash Chopra have worked with music director Ravi earlier. But when Yash Chopra started his maiden Film Production Unit (Yashraj Films) Laxmikant-Pyarelal were the first choice to score the music for “Daag” (1973), a superb music.
MKD FILMS:- (Manmohan Desai)
When Manmohan Desai has started his own Film Production Unit, with “Amar Akabar Anthony” (1977) Laxmikant-Pyarelal was his first choice for his musical hit film. This association last till 1998 and has given some of the best musical hits.
MUKTA ARTS:- (Subhash Ghai)
In 1980 Subhash Ghai launched his Film Company and started operating as Producer and Direcgor and made “Karz”. Laxmikant-Pyarelal was his first choice for this musical hit film. This association also lasted long till 1998.
VIP FILMS:- (Manoj Kumar)
Leaving behind Kalyanji-Anajdaji Manoj Kumar gave chance to score the music of “Shor” (1971) followed by “Roti Kapada Aur Makan” (1974), “Kranti” and many more. This association lasted till the end of the century.
RAWAL FILM:- (H.S.Rawal)
Naushad were the most favorite for H.S. Rawal but when he started “Mehaboob Ki Mehandi” (1970) Laxmikant-Pyarelal was the first choice.
DHARMA FILMS:- (Yash Johar)
When Yash Johar started his film company and started making “Dostana”(1980), he opted Laxmikant-Pyarelal to score the music. This association continued till 1996.
Let us shorten the topic. When Actor JITENDRA started his own film production (Tiriupati Pictures) he opted for LP and made “Humjoli” (1971) followed with many more films. Similarly Actor DHARMENDRA started his own film production in 1976. He gave first preference for the music of “Pratigya”. Aactor ANIL KAPOOR and family also opted for LP for their maiden film production unit with “Mr. India” (1987) and followed till “Prem” (1996).
Apart from these LP have also worked with the following big film producers and directors.
B.R. Chopra “Dastaan” (1973)
Hrishekesh Mukharjee… “Satyakam” (1971)
Vijay Anand… “Ram Balram” (1978)
Ramanand Sagar… “Charas” (1976) and many more
Vijay Bhatt.. “Banphool” (1971)
Dalal Guha “Dushman” (1971), “Dost” (1974) and more
Gulzar… “Palkon Ki Chhaon Main” (1978)
K.Vishwanath “Sargam” (1977), “Sur Sangam”(1985) and many more.
Basu Bhattacharya.. “Piya Ka Ghar”(1971)
Shakti Samanta.. “Anurodh”(1977)
J.P.Datta… “Rajput”(1985) and more.
Girish Karnad “Utsav” (1985)

Satish Kaushik “Roop Ki Raani Choron Ka Raja” (1990) and “Prem”(1995)
R.K. Nayar “Intquam” (1969) and more.
“Binaca Geet Mala” and Laxmikant-Pyarelal:-
ReplyDeleteLP have completely dominated the Weekly Countdown programme called “Binca Geet Mala”, the most popular and famous musical radio programme of it’s time. It's first broadcast was in 1953 by Radio Ceylon and it's host was the inimitable Ameen Sayani. The Binaca Geet Mala ranked the most popular Bollywood film songs according to sales in select shops in select cities.
In the third quarter of 1963, LP’s first ever songs Hasta Hua Nurani Chehara form Parasmani hit the “Binaca Geet Mala”. After that LP’s songs were regularly and prominently aired on “Binaca Geet Mala”. There used to be sixteen songs in each of the weekly “Binaca Geet Mala” programme, more than half the numbers of the songs were of LP. There are certain weekly Binaca Geet Mala programmes in which more than 13 out of 16 songs of LP were broadcast when LP were on right on top of their carrier. BGM used to broadcast annual (Vasrshik ) programme giving the orders of the top 32 songs of every year. In this programme also LP were having upper hand. Not only that, on an average, there used to be at least more than 15 songs used to be of LP, that too about 50 % of the songs in between top to first ten positions. The Binaca Geet Mala records shows that Laxmikant-Pyarelal have completely dominated this musical programme.
Here is the list of the songs of LP which were on top position in that particular year.
1967 Milan:- Sawan Ka Mahina Mukesh & Lata Mangeshkar
1968 Shagird:- Dil Bil Pyar Vyar Lata Mangeshkar
1969 Intquam:- Kaise Rahu Chup Lata Manageshkar
1970 Do Raste:- Bindiya Chamake Gi Lata Mangeshkar
1975 Roti Kapada Aur Makarn:- Mehangai Mar Gai Jani Babu Quwal & Lata
1980 Sargam:- Dafali Wale Mohammad Rafi & Lata
1984 Hero:- Tu Mera Hero Hai Anuradha Paudwal & Manhar
1986 Sanjog:- Yashoda Ka Nandlala Lata Mangeshkar
1987 Naam:- Chitthi Aayi Hai Pankaj Udhas
1989 Ram Lakhan:- My Name Is Lakhan Mohammed Aziz
1993 Khalnayak:- Choli Ke Peeche Alka Ygnik & Ila Arun
Ajay has some facts wrong. I doubt if Sanjog topped '86 lits - it was Naam. '87 was Khudgarz (Rajesh Roshan). I also doubt of Hero topped '84 but that might be true.
ReplyDeleteGulzar only wrote Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein. Asit Sen directed Sharafat, Pankuj Parashar directed Rajkumar (and Chaalbaaz), Mukul S. Anmand directed Hum, Vijay Anand directed Rajput (and Ram Balram) - both flop films with hit songs and Basu Chaterjee directed Piya Ka Ghar
